Prayers for Hajj: Duas and Supplications Guide

Hajj and Umrah are deeply personal journeys. While the physical actions of walking, circling, and standing are structured, the essence of the pilgrimage lies in the prayers and supplications (Duas) you make.

Many pilgrims feel anxious, wondering, "What exactly should I be saying while walking around the Kaaba?"

Except for a few specific moments, there are actually very few mandatory or prescribed prayers. The best Dua is the one that comes sincerely from your own heart, in your own language. However, reciting the Duas made by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ carries immense blessing.

Here is a guide to the most important prayers and supplications during Hajj.

1. The Talbiyah (The Anthem of the Pilgrim)

This is the single most important chant of Hajj and Umrah, recited from the moment you enter Ihram until you see the Kaaba.

"Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, Labbayka la sharika laka labbayk. Innal-hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak." (Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily all praise and grace, and the dominion, are Yours. You have no partner.)

2. Prayers During Tawaf

Surprisingly, there is no specific Dua required for each of the seven rounds of Tawaf. You can recite Quran, make personal Duas, or simply do Dhikr (Saying SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar).

However, there is one specific Sunnah Dua to recite on every round when you are walking between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone:

"Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil 'akhirati hasanatan waqina 'adhaban-nar." (Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.)

3. Prayer When Drinking Zamzam

After Tawaf, pilgrims drink Zamzam water. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Zamzam water is for whatever it is drunk for." This means it is a prime time for prayers to be answered. A popular Dua taught by the companions is:

"Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan wasi'an, wa shifa'an min kulli da'." (O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, abundant provision, and healing from every illness.)

4. Prayers During Sa'i (Safa and Marwah)

When you approach the hill of Safa, it is Sunnah to recite the Quranic verse:

"Innas-safa wal marwata min sha'a'irillah..." (Indeed, As-Safa and Al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah...)

When standing on the hills of Safa and Marwah, facing the Kaaba, raise your hands and say:

"Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar. La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu, wa huwa 'ala kulli shai'in qadir." (Allah is the Greatest. There is no deity except Allah alone without partner. To Him belongs the dominion, and to Him belongs all praise, and He is over all things competent.)

5. The Ultimate Prayer: The Day of Arafat

The Day of Arafat is the core of Hajj. It is a day dedicated entirely to intense prayer and seeking forgiveness. The Prophet ﷺ stated that the best supplication on the Day of Arafat is:

"La ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd, wa huwa 'ala kulli shai'in qadir."

Spend the hours of Arafat speaking to Allah from your heart. Ask for forgiveness for specific sins, pray for your family, your health, the Muslim Ummah, and your ultimate salvation in the Hereafter.

The Power of Dua on the Day of Arafat

The pinnacle of Hajj is the Day of Arafat. It is on this vast plain that millions of pilgrims stand from noon until sunset, begging Allah for forgiveness. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Hajj is Arafat."

The Best Supplication

The Prophet (ﷺ) stated that the best supplication to make on the Day of Arafat is: "La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu, wa huwa 'ala kulli shayin qadir." (There is no true deity worthy of worship except Allah, alone, without partner. To Him belongs the dominion and all praise, and He is capable of all things.)

Making Personal Duas

Arafat is the time for intensely personal, tearful supplications. Pilgrims are advised to prepare a "Dua List" months in advance. This is the moment to pray for your parents, your children, your health, your career, and the forgiveness of your gravest sins. Many scholars advise spending the final hour before Maghrib (sunset) on Arafat in complete devotion and continuous supplication.

Recommended Dhikr During Tawaf

While walking around the Kaaba, there are no mandatory prayers, but certain supplications are highly recommended based on the Sunnah.

  • Between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone: The Prophet (ﷺ) would recite: "Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan waqina 'adhaban-nar." (Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.)
  • Continuous Dhikr: During the rest of the Tawaf, pilgrims should occupy their tongues with SubhanAllah (Glory be to Allah), Alhamdulillah (All praise is due to Allah), and Allahu Akbar (Allah is the greatest).

Quran and Sunnah references

  • Quran 2:196 on completing Hajj and Umrah for Allah.
  • Quran 3:97 on the obligation of Hajj for those able to undertake it.
  • Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim: Umrah to Umrah expiates sins between them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to read Duas from a book?

No. While pocket Dua books are helpful, reading prayers in a language you do not understand is not ideal. It is much better to pray to Allah sincerely in your native language.

Can I pray for worldly things during Hajj?

Yes, absolutely! Islam encourages asking Allah for both spiritual salvation and worldly success (health, wealth, family, career). Allah loves when His servants ask Him for their needs.
