How Long Does Umrah Take? A Realistic Time Guide
If you are planning your first spiritual journey to Makkah, you might be confusing the timeline of Umrah with the days-long rituals of Hajj.
The good news? Umrah is a much shorter, continuous set of rituals. Unlike Hajj, which takes five to six days, Umrah can be completed in just a few hours.
Here is a realistic breakdown of exactly how long each step of Umrah will take you, depending on crowd levels and your physical fitness.
The Average Duration of Umrah
On average, a physically fit adult can expect to complete the entire Umrah in 3 to 4 hours from the moment they enter Al-Masjid Al-Haram. During extreme peak seasons (like the last 10 days of Ramadan), this can stretch to 5 or 6 hours due to heavy congestion.
Here is the time breakdown for each required ritual:
1. Preparation and Entering Ihram (1 - 2 Hours)
This happens before you even reach the mosque.
- Taking a shower (Ghusl) and changing into the Ihram garments takes about 30–45 minutes at your hotel or at the Miqat station.
- Travel Time: Traveling from the Miqat (or Jeddah Airport, or the train station) to Al-Masjid Al-Haram varies wildly depending on traffic, but usually adds at least 1 hour.
2. Performing Tawaf (45 Minutes - 2 Hours)
Tawaf involves circling the Kaaba seven times. Your speed depends entirely on where you are allowed to perform it:
- The Mataf (Ground Floor): This is the closest you can get to the Kaaba. It is the shortest distance but often the most crowded. If the crowd is moving steadily, 7 rounds take about 45 to 60 minutes.
- The Upper Floors / Roof: Because the circumference is much wider, completing 7 rounds on the upper floors requires walking a significantly longer distance. This can take 1.5 to 2 hours.
- Praying the 2 Rak'ahs & Drinking Zamzam: Add an extra 15 minutes for this step after finishing Tawaf.
3. Performing Sa'i (1.5 - 2 Hours)
Sa'i involves walking between the hills of Safa and Marwah seven times. The total distance covered is approximately 3.1 kilometers (1.9 miles).
- For an average walking pace, this takes about 1.5 hours.
- If you are pushing a wheelchair for an elderly relative, or walking slowly due to fatigue, expect this to take closer to 2 hours.
- Fortunately, the Sa'i area (Masa'a) is fully air-conditioned and has Zamzam water dispensers along the way, making it less physically exhausting than an outdoor walk.
4. Halq or Taqsir (30 Minutes)
The final step is shaving or trimming your hair.
- Walking out of the mosque and finding one of the hundreds of licensed barbershops right outside the Haram takes about 15 to 30 minutes.
- The actual haircut takes less than 5 minutes. (Women trim a fingertip’s length of their own hair in the privacy of their hotel room).
Tips for a Faster (and Easier) Umrah
- Choose the Right Time: The Mataf is usually emptiest between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM, or late at night between 1:00 AM and 3:00 AM.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of Zamzam water. Dehydration will slow down your pace significantly.
- Use Wheelchairs if Needed: If you are elderly or have mobility issues, renting an electric scooter for Tawaf and Sa'i can reduce the total time to under 2 hours.
Factors That Affect the Duration of Umrah
While the core rituals can be completed in a few hours, several logistical factors will influence exactly how long your Umrah takes from start to finish:
1. Crowd Density and the Season
The time of year you perform Umrah is the single biggest factor. During Ramadan (especially the last ten days) or the weeks immediately preceding Hajj, the Mataf (circumambulation area) and Sa'i area will be incredibly crowded. A Tawaf that takes 30 minutes in the off-season might take 2 hours during peak season.
2. Time of Day
Performing Umrah immediately after major daily prayers (like Fajr or Maghrib) generally takes longer because you are merging with the massive crowds exiting the prayer areas. Many experienced pilgrims recommend performing Umrah in the late morning (around 9:00 AM) or deep in the night (around 2:00 AM) for a quicker, more peaceful experience.
3. Physical Fitness Levels
Umrah involves significant walking. Tawaf is roughly 1.5 to 3 kilometers (depending on which floor you are on), and Sa'i is an exact 3.15 kilometers. Pilgrims who are elderly, use wheelchairs, or simply walk at a slower pace should factor in extra time. Wheelchair users on the upper levels will have a longer distance to cover for Tawaf.
Making the Most of Your Umrah Time
While it is helpful to know how long Umrah takes, the ultimate goal is not speed, but spiritual presence.
- Don't Rush: It is common for first-timers to feel overwhelmed and rush through the rituals just to "finish." Remember that every step in the Haram is an act of worship.
- Focus on Intention (Niyyah): Spend time making personal Duas (supplications) during Tawaf. The time you spend walking should be filled with remembrance of Allah (Dhikr), not idle conversation.
- Rest When Needed: If you feel physically exhausted during Sa'i, it is perfectly acceptable to pause, sit on the side benches, drink some Zamzam water, and resume when you have caught your breath.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to do Tawaf and Sa'i on the same day?
Yes, Umrah is meant to be a continuous set of rituals. While taking a short break to rest, pray an obligatory prayer, or use the restroom is perfectly fine, you should not delay Sa'i to the next day without a valid medical reason.
How far do you walk during Umrah in total?
Between Tawaf and Sa'i, the average pilgrim walks about 5 to 7 kilometers (3 to 4.5 miles) depending on the floor they use for Tawaf.
