How to Make Wudu Step by Step: A Complete Ablution Guide
In Islam, physical purity is intrinsically linked to spiritual purity. Before a Muslim can perform their daily prayers (Salah) or touch the Holy Quran, they must be in a state of ritual purity achieved through ablution, known as Wudu (or Wudhu).
Allah says in the Quran: "O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles..." (Quran 5:6).
If you are a beginner or just looking to refine your practice, here is a complete, easy-to-follow guide on how to make wudu.
The Step-by-Step Wudu Process
Before you begin, ensure the water you are using is clean and pure.
1. Intention (Niyyah)
Make the intention in your heart to perform wudu for the sake of Allah and to purify yourself for worship. You do not need to say this aloud.
2. Say Bismillah
Say "Bismillah" (In the name of Allah) before beginning the physical washing.
3. Wash Your Hands (3 Times)
Wash both hands up to the wrists, making sure water passes between your fingers. Always start with the right hand, then the left.
4. Rinse Your Mouth (3 Times)
Take water into your right hand, put it into your mouth, swirl it around to rinse thoroughly, and spit it out.
5. Sniff Water into the Nose (3 Times)
Sniff a little water into your nostrils using your right hand, and then gently blow it out using your left hand to clean the nasal passages.
6. Wash Your Face (3 Times)
Wash your entire face. The boundaries of the face are from the top of the forehead (where the hairline begins) to the bottom of the chin, and from earlobe to earlobe.
7. Wash Your Arms to the Elbows (3 Times)
Wash your right arm completely from the fingertips up to (and including) the elbow. Repeat this for the left arm.
8. Wipe Your Head (1 Time)
Wet your hands with fresh water. Starting from the front of your hairline, wipe your hands over your head to the back of your neck, and then bring them back to the front.
9. Wipe Your Ears (1 Time)
Using the same water from wiping your head, use your index fingers to clean the inside folds of your ears, and your thumbs to wipe the back of the ears.
10. Wash Your Feet (3 Times)
Wash your right foot completely up to and including the ankle, making sure water reaches between the toes. Repeat this for the left foot.
The Dua After Wudu
Once finished, it is highly recommended to look towards the sky and recite the Shahadah: "Ash-hadu an la ilaha illal-lahu wahdahu la shareeka lah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasooluh." (I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.)
What Breaks Your Wudu?
You remain in a state of wudu until it is broken (nullified). The main things that break wudu are:
- Urination, defecation, or passing gas.
- Deep sleep (where you lose awareness).
- Bleeding heavily or vomiting a mouthful.
- Intoxication or loss of consciousness.
The Obligatory Elements (Fard) of Wudu
Islamic scholars agree on the following obligatory elements without which Wudu is invalid:
- Washing the face (from forehead hairline to chin, ear to ear) — once minimum
- Washing both arms (including elbows) — once minimum
- Wiping (Mas'h) over the head — a portion of the head at minimum
- Washing both feet (including ankles) — once minimum
- Intention (Niyyah) — in the heart before beginning
- Correct order of the steps (according to Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools)
The Sunnah Method (Complete Wudu)
For maximum reward, follow this sequence:
- Say Bismillah
- Wash hands three times (to the wrists)
- Rinse mouth three times (gargling recommended)
- Rinse nose three times (sniff water in, blow out)
- Wash face three times (from hairline to chin)
- Wash right arm three times (including elbow)
- Wash left arm three times (including elbow)
- Wipe head once (wet hand passed over entire head back to front)
- Wipe ears (inside with index fingers, outside with thumbs)
- Wash right foot three times (including ankle)
- Wash left foot three times (including ankle)
Things That Break (Nullify) Wudu
| Nullifier | Notes | |-----------|-------| | Using the toilet (urination, defecation) | Major nullifier | | Passing wind | Always nullifies | | Deep sleep | Reclining sleep nullifies; dozing while sitting may not | | Loss of consciousness | Always nullifies | | Touching private parts (without barrier) | Nullifies according to Shafi'i and Hanbali; not Hanafi | | Eating camel meat | Nullifies according to Hanbali only |
Things That Do NOT Break Wudu
- Touching the opposite gender (Hanafi view — this does NOT nullify)
- Laughing during Salah (nullifies Salah only, not Wudu, according to most scholars)
- Bleeding/vomiting (nullifies in Hanafi; does not in Shafi'i/Maliki/Hanbali)
- Applying cream or lotions to the body

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to perform wudu before every single prayer?
No, you only need to perform wudu if your previous wudu has been broken. If you hold your wudu from Dhuhr to Asr, you do not need to wash again.
Can I wipe over my socks instead of washing my feet?
Yes, if you put on thick, non-transparent socks while you already had wudu, you can simply wipe over the top of the socks with wet hands for up to 24 hours (or 72 hours if traveling).
