Sahih Muslim: The Characteristics of the Hypocrites (Munafiqin)

In Islamic theology, a Munafiq (hypocrite) is someone who outwardly professes Islam while inwardly concealing disbelief or harboring hostility toward the faith. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ issued severe warnings about the spiritual dangers of hypocrisy, noting that the hypocrites will occupy the lowest depths of Hell.

Imam Muslim dedicated a specific section in his Sahih collection to the characteristics and signs of hypocrites.

The Signs of a Hypocrite

The Prophet ﷺ outlined clear, behavioral signs that indicate hypocrisy in one's heart. These signs serve as a mirror for believers to evaluate their own sincerity.

According to a famous Hadith in Sahih Muslim (narrated by Abu Huraira), the Prophet ﷺ said: *"The signs of a hypocrite are three:

  1. Whenever he speaks, he tells a lie.
  2. Whenever he promises, he always breaks it.
  3. If you trust him, he proves to be dishonest (breaches the trust)."*

Another narration adds a fourth trait: "And whenever he quarrels, he behaves in a very imprudent, evil, and insulting manner."

The Heaviest Prayers for the Hypocrites

Hypocrisy often manifests in a lack of genuine devotion, especially when no one is watching or when worship becomes difficult.

The Prophet ﷺ said in Sahih Muslim: "The most burdensome prayers for the hypocrites are the Isha (night) prayer and the Fajr (dawn) prayer. If they knew what reward is in them, they would come to them even if they had to crawl."

This highlights that true faith requires effort, especially when it is inconvenient. Hypocrites perform good deeds primarily to be seen by others, so attending prayers in the darkness (before electricity) held no social benefit for them.

A Warning for Believers

The Companions of the Prophet (Sahabah) were deeply terrified of developing traits of hypocrisy. Even Umar ibn Al-Khattab, one of the greatest companions, would ask Hudhayfah (who knew the secret list of hypocrites in Madinah) if his name was among them.

Studying the "Kitab Sifat Al-Munafiqin" in Sahih Muslim is not meant to judge others, but to constantly purify our own intentions and ensure our outward actions match our inward devotion to Allah.

The Attributes of the Hypocrites in Sahih Muslim

One of the most sobering and spiritually critical sections of Sahih Muslim is the "Book of the Characteristics of the Hypocrites" (Kitab Sifat Al-Munafiqin). In Islamic theology, a hypocrite (Munafiq) is someone who outwardly professes Islam but inwardly harbors disbelief or profound spiritual disease. The Quran places the ultimate hypocrites in the lowest depths of Hellfire.

Recognizing the Signs

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) provided clear behavioral indicators to help Muslims identify hypocrisy—not necessarily to judge others, but to constantly audit their own hearts. According to authentic narrations, the core signs of a hypocrite include:

  1. Lying: When they speak, they consistently tell lies.
  2. Breaking Promises: When they make a promise, they break it without justification.
  3. Betraying Trust: When they are entrusted with something (a secret, money, or a duty), they betray that trust.
  4. Extreme Arguing: When they argue, they resort to foul language, severe insults, and abusive behavior.

The Purpose of Studying These Hadiths

The great companions of the Prophet, despite their guaranteed places in Paradise, were terrified of hypocrisy. Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RA) famously asked Hudhayfah (the keeper of the Prophet's secrets) if his name was on the list of hypocrites.

Studying this book is a tool for self-purification (Tazkiyah). If you notice any of these traits in yourself—such as a tendency to lie or break promises—it is a spiritual red flag requiring immediate repentance and behavioral correction.

Common Questions Pilgrims Ask Pilgrims Ask

Is someone considered a non-Muslim if they have these traits? No. Classical scholars distinguish between "Hypocrisy of Belief" (major hypocrisy, which takes one out of Islam) and "Hypocrisy of Action" (minor hypocrisy). Having a bad habit of lying is a major sin and a trait of hypocrisy (minor), but it does not make a person a disbeliever.

How can I protect myself from hypocrisy? The Prophet (ﷺ) prescribed several cures. Consistently performing prayers in congregation, giving hidden charity, and frequently making Dua to Allah to purify the heart are the best defenses. Furthermore, merely fearing hypocrisy is ironically a sign of true faith.

Who was the leader of the hypocrites in Medina? Abdullah ibn Ubayy was the historical leader of the hypocrites in Medina during the Prophet's time. He continuously plotted against the Muslims while pretending to be one of them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is someone a hypocrite if they occasionally tell a lie?

There is 'major hypocrisy' (disbelief in the heart) and 'minor hypocrisy' (having the behavioral traits of a hypocrite, like lying). A Muslim who lies commits a grave sin and exhibits a trait of a hypocrite, but they do not leave the fold of Islam unless their heart rejects the faith.
